The Plan

We are off on the ferry bound for Caen then we drive across France to Switzerland at Basel and on to St Gallen. We have an overnight stop in Burnhaupt-le-Haut along the way.
After 5 nights with our friends in St Gallen we set off once again via Geneva and an overnight stop in Charolles in France then arrive in Jard-sur-Mer on the next day.
After 2 weeks there we drive to St Malo for two nights before getting the ferry home.

Friday 2nd September 2011 ~ Again, scroll down for photos ~

Today we decided to head down to La Tranche as we haven’t left Jard all week; we always struggle to find the right way into the centre of the town where there is shaded parking under trees, but at a cost. Today was no different and having driven round in circles we headed for a newly developed area by the beach and parked for free with just a 5 minute walk to the ,main shopping street. Sadly I think we felt it had been a bit of a waste of time as we wandered a bit aimlessly in very hot weather, found a loo which was an experience I guess before heading back to the car! The loo was a unisex, washed between customers variety, all very good except the concession to those who need a seat is a pull down hinged job which has no pan; consequently when you do what you came to do the result all splashes about your feet. Also the floor is soaking wet, from the wash so you have to try to keep your shorts round your knees while getting the angle right to avoid the splashes. All quite challenging!!! Not a facility to use if you had La Tranche Tummy!

We left the beach and headed to the Super U where we did quite a big shop as they have a better selection of local wines etc than the Jard store though a much smaller butchers counter; I suspect this store is more aimed at tourists and the Jard one serves the local community better. Four years ago we were in this shop when news of the 7/7 bombings had just filtered across the channel, the day after we ‘won’ the Olympics.

On the way back we stopped briefly at Zagerella for a couple of photos of Helen’s campsite from 2003; there must be some good memories for her from that summer but on the whole it was a very hard and emotional time for her with very poor pay.

We returned home then headed off once again to St Vincent-sur-Jard, this time through the woods in order to get some shade; we had an ice-cream and just sat in the shade looking out to sea. Have we turned into a little old couple I wonder!

We decided to head home and then to the Port area for a meal out. We haven’t eaten out since we got here, so we did. We ate at the Pizzeria on the harbour side, I had a salad with lardoons and duck bits and pieces followed by Moules Frites and Percy had a goats cheese salad followed by a chicken pizza, the latter was rather a disappointment as it was very dry. Entertainment, for want of any other word, was provided for us by a family of English, a man, lady and little girl aged about 6. it was very embarrassing really as they made absolutely NO ATTEMPT to speak a word of French, not even a ‘Bonjour’ or a ‘Merci’ just spoke as if they were at home and the daughter was encouraged to have the chicken nuggets!

We decided to come home for coffee and actually both felt very full, whether it was the food, the 2 Desperados or the heat I don’t know. Anyway, generally a good day.
